A Summer in San Antonio, Texas

August 6, 2016

Are you all planning for a summer day out ? Many of you might be thinking what best can we do to make ourselves cool and relaxed during summer. Here, in today’s blog, I will be jotting down a list of places which you can visit. These places are pretty close by and can be covered in a day.

Natural Bridge Caverns , San Antonio

The Natural Bridge Caverns are the largest known commercial caverns in the U.S. state of Texas.he name was derived from the 60 ft natural limestone slab bridge that spans the amphitheater setting of the cavern’s entrance. The span was left suspended when a sinkhole collapsed below it. The caverns are located near the city of San Antonio, Texas. The amazing factor about these caverns is that the temperature inside the caverns is set at 21-degree celsius and a humidity of about 99 percent all year around. The day when we visited the caverns was not too crowded. There are tour guides at every point to explain the different rock formations. This is a place which you can visit if you want to escape from the sun.

Few Tips:

  1. Carry a bottle of water for sure and make sure you have had a good meal. Because there is an hour of walking inside the caverns.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes

The best tour amongst the ones offered is the discovery tour which lasts for about an hour.

2. Natural Bridge Wildlife Safari, San Antonio

This is a must visit for families with kids as they would really enjoy the encounter with wild animals. We had a really good time here and one good thing about this place is that we need not walk from one place to another to watch the animals. The animals walk up to your car and visit you. I am not kidding! That is the specialty of Natural Bridge Wildlife Safari.

As soon as you buy the tickets to enter the park, you will be given a packet of food which can be fed to the animals. You drive your car at a speed of 5 miles per hour inside the park. With over 450-acres of pristine, natural, protected environment, animal populations continue to thrive. There are around 500 animals which have chosen this ranch as their home.If you have an animal lover in your midst, it’s a must-see destination.

Open daily from 9:00 A.M.–5:00 P.M., with an extra hour until 6:00 P.M. during much of the summer, the ranch is great fun for kids of all ages. Tickets are per person vs. per car. The ranch offers annual passes and military discounts (active and retired) and often features coupons for weekday visits. To fully enjoy your day, arrive early. The animals are out and about enjoying their morning. Our trip to Natural Bridge Wildlife Safari lasted about two to three hours and again it depends on the time of day, the amount of traffic on the ranch, and how long you choose to hang out after the safari.

Tubing on the Comal River , New Braunfels

The river that meanders through New Braunfels has a lot of summer activities to offer for people of all ages. We too wanted to explore something new this summer. We chose – River Tubing. This was an exciting activity – just float the Comal river! The way it works is you go to any one of the river tube operators, rent the tube for $18, wear your life jackets if needed, float on the comal river and hop on the shuttle bus back to the place you started. You can also buy your tube from Academy and float yourself.

This was the most chilled out part of the trip. It is a 2-hour long river tubing experience. Since we were a batch of three, we tied our tubes together and floated till the end. Your drinks can also stay cool if you just tag them along in a bag, or rent a floating cooler. Summers are the best time to experience this as the water would be slightly warm and ideal to swim. In between, you might as well swim for a while and then hop onto the tube. There are a couple of chutes that are awesome fun; a natural waterslide!

I would advise you all not to take your mobile phones or cameras as it will get completely wet. Hence, we could not take photographs during the river tubing.

What to wear: You can wear your swimsuits or any comfortable shorts and t-shirt. Apply enough sunscreen lotion and carry  goggles for sure.

Comal tubes is about 20 minutes drive from Natural Bridge Wildlife Safari.

There are plenty of other activities that you can experience like:

  1. fishing
  2. Stand up paddling
  3. Kayaking
  4. Canoeing

The downtown of New Braunfels has lots to offer in terms of dining. We were in search of Mexican cuisine and we found one named Herbert’s. It is quite close to Texas Tubes.

The dining experience was quite enjoyable. They had an outdoor patio with a live band. We were so hungry after the river tubing that we finished the complimentary chips and salsa within 5 minutes… and they just kept coming. The chicken and beef enchiladas were too good and we felt they served authentic tex-mex food.

Hope you enjoyed reading this bit of summer fun that I had. Since the summer vacations are on and your kids are at home wanting to do something new and exciting. Plan a one day trip soon and have enormous fun.
